I'm a Terrible Patient!

I don't know about anyone else, but I hate to have anything restrain me in any way. I think I am a true free spirit at heart and I have a really hard time being tied down. Recently I was watching my best friend's kids and wrenched my foot on a step. After an incorrect diagnosis and 4 weeks of walking on it, a fracture was discovered in my foot. I am not kidding when I say I'm a bad patient. I was given a very stylish and light (not) boot to wear (see the picture above) and strict instructions not to take it off or I would be given a plaster cast. It literally takes everything in my soul to keep the fucker on. I've only taken it off four or five times, which I am actually really proud of. I do realize I am very lucky to be able-bodied, to walk and not be on crutches. My struggle is tiny and insignificant, really, but I have to shower in it, sleep in it and wear it for 8 weeks!!! I am usually camping, hiking, kayaking and the like and I wish I at least had a good story. So, since I am REALLY trying not to be a whiner out loud, I thought I would share it with those unlucky enough to stumble upon my blog. By the way, the cheesy 80's looking white socks and sneakers in the cast picture are not mine:)

I love Fall!

There is nothing I love more than Fall. I could never live someplace that didn’t have the changing of the seasons. It’s like my body, soul and spirit have a rebirth every time the seasons change. Fall is the best season for so many reasons. I love Ohio State football. I was raised with the OSU fight song blaring at the earliest possible moment every football Saturday. I love the color of the leaves, getting out sweaters that have been packed away and the smell of fires coming from chimneys. It is also my favorite season for camping. There’s nothing better than a campfire and sleeping in a tent on a chilly night. I can’t stay away from Fall colors for my earring designs right now either. I have some of my samples listed. 9/11

I was really affected this year by all the 9/11 memorials. I was listening to Howard Stern (major guilty pleasure) and he replayed his 9/11/01 broadcast. I turned it on right after the first plane hit. I was immediately taken back to that day. I ended up crying in my car for half an hour, mourning the loss of so many people. I started thinking about what I was doing in my life 5 years ago when it happened. I wasn’t living with my boyfriend yet, my nephew was about to turn one. Those events in my life seem so long ago, but 9/11 seems like yesterday. I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t think about it in some way. I guess it’s how the older generation feels about Pearl Harbor. It’s amazing how one event changes the world forever.

Roller Derby

I had a really interesting experience this weekend. I went to an all girl roller derby. There is something so refreshing about an all girl sport, any sport. The women on the team have great names like Pippy Rip Your Stocking, Punky Bruiser and Dirty Mother Trucker. This league has just started and they only have four teams in Columbus. The best parts that Pabst is their beer sponsor. So, I was sittin’ around, drinkin’ a PBR and watchin’ girls beat each other up…what more could I ask for. If you have a chance to check out a match, the people watching alone is well worth it.

Everyone has an obsession. I have friends who have well over 100 pairs of shoes (what the !?!?!?) My boyfriend has to have every new gadget that comes out. I have jewelry as my obsession. I only buy and create pieces that I absolutely love. I think my love of jewelry came from a family that I spent a significant amount of time with as a child. The Williams’ were a great family who were all about peace and activism. “No Nukes” and “Save the Whales” bumper stickers abounded. They owned a great store in Westerville, Ohio, where I grew up that carried distinctive art, candles, jewelry, etc. You see these stores on every campus now, but it was one of a kind in my town. My town was one of those really boring suburbs that reminds me of movies (American Beauty? Heathers?....exactly) Joiwind and Journey were their kids and Joiwind was my best friend. She was one of those childhood friends that you have a million and one adventures with. The family exposed me to a lot of things that have shaped the person I am now (tolerant, free thinking). They were Jewish and I got to go to Hebrew School with Joiwind. Definitely different than the Catholicism I was raised with (and am no longer). I got to tag along to some activism rallies (Joiwind’s Uncle Sluggo, really Harvey Wasserman was a famous activist) and reggae festivals. I spent a great deal of time in the shop surrounded by beautiful and unique stones, metals, candles and other artistic items. I’ve loved it ever since and am so grateful for all the experiences they gave me.
